Process

We design illuminations, architectural light installations, digital art and media for buildings, precincts and public spaces.

We bring purpose, direction and movement to the integration of light and digital media.

The inspiration of a project already exists within a space, we see our role is to unveil and nurture the work into life.

Our process stages

Concept Design

Concept Design

Our Concept Design begins with a Discovery Phase, whereby we undertake research to understand the context of the project and to develop an artistic narrative and intention. From this foundation, we generate our concepts from sketch designs to high-level design visualisations to explore and visualise the design ideas.

Concept Design also includes preliminary technical layouts, integration drawings, proposed hardware datasheets, preliminary control system design and RAMUS fee estimation.

DISCOVERY
Research and exploration to understand the project context, including environmental, cultural, and social considerations to develop & deepen the narrative and vision for the experience.

SKETCH DESIGN
Development of high-level design options to inform concept design direction.

CONTENT EXPLORATION
Exploration of the project narrative to inform the use of visual content through light, movement and connectivity to the project’s context.

DESIGN VISUALISATION
Concept designs are visualised and presented via a series of still renders, animated still renders and fly-throughs.

TECHNICAL DESIGN
Preliminary detailing of the technical design through layout drawings, fixture specifications, data sheets and control system design.

PROJECT ESTIMATION
Estimation of RAMUS project design fees and project delivery timeline, as well as lighting and media technology procurement and installation where appropriate.

Design Development

Design Development

Throughout this stage, we develop our relationships with all stakeholders in the project delivery including the client, suppliers, architects and services. We detail the design and how the artwork technically integrates into the architecture and its built environment. We undertake testing and prototyping to investigate and further develop the concept design and to fully understand the practical expression of the piece.

PROJECT COORDINATION
Liaison and meeting attendance with suppliers, client and contractors as required to coordinate all deliverables.

TECHNICAL COORDINATION
Liaison and meeting attendance with suppliers, client and contractors as required to coordinate media and lighting related to power and data infrastructure and connectivity throughout the design development phase.

PROTOTYPING
Media and/or lighting tests conducted either on or off-site as required, to investigate concept design outcomes and support product selection.

DESIGN INTEGRATION
Investigation and design required to determine the suitable integration into architecture and environment including fixing methodologies, modelling where required to confirm physical tests, lighting specification and placement.

CONTROL SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
Design and development of the control system, ancillary components and control methodology to process the input formats and output signals as required by the design intent.

DOCUMENTATION
Design specification produced to detail the media and/or fixture layout, fixing methodology and placement, power and data connectivity for inclusion in the procurement documentation.

PROJECT ESTIMATION
Reviewed and updated estimation of RAMUS design fees, time-line and equipment costs for overall project delivery.

Content Development

Content Development

Running concurrently with the Design Development phase, RAMUS’ bespoke visual content is where the creative narrative of a project comes to life. It can be expressed through various mediums, including hand-drawn or CG animations, data-driven generative art, high-resolution cinematic footage, or interactive applications.

In collaboration with the client, we plan and develop creative themes and technical approaches in readiness for producing the content material.

Content Production

Content Production

Runs concurrently with Construction Phase.

CONTENT PRODUCTION

Generation of the content material through the appropriate and required media. This includes cinematography, animation, application development and code/algorithm creation.

CONTENT POST-PRODUCTION
The subsequent organisation, editing, prototyping, re-visualising and processing of the content production into the final content material, in readiness for the final programming phase.

Construction and Installation

Construction and Installation

Through the construction and fabrication phase, we provide design review and coordination, ensuring the integrity of the design is maintained through to the installation.

We work closely with builders, suppliers, and infrastructure consultants to resolve issues that arise to ensure there are no gaps between all disciplines.

We review and approve all installations and Inspection Test Plans to confirm fixture performance matches the expectations of the design intent. This phase also includes the full installation, commissioning and mapping of the RAMUS CORE control system custom designed and built to the needs of each of our projects.

PROCUREMENT REVIEW
Consultation with regards to procurement documentation, review of the received submissions for the supply and installation of the lighting and/or media design.

PROJECT COORDINATION
Liaison and meeting attendance with suppliers, client and contractors as required to coordinate project deliverables.

TECHNICAL COORDINATION
Liaison and meeting attendance with suppliers, client and contractors as required to coordinate media and lighting-related power and data infrastructure and connectivity throughout the construction phase.

HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT
Design and provision of the CORE control system to support the implementation of the installation content.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
Development of additional API’s, GUI’s and applications

as needed for the CORE control system to support the implementation of the installation content.

COORDINATION Coordination and supervision of the installation and commissioning of lighting, media and control equipment.

DOCUMENTATION REVIEW
Review and sign off of shop drawings prior to installation to confirm compatibility with the design intent.

ITP REVIEW
Review and sign off of the installers Inspection Test Plan documentation.

CONTROL SYSTEM
On-site installation and commissioning of the RAMUS CORE control system, including integration and mapping of all media surfaces and lighting fixtures.

Programming

Programming

The last stage of the creative process is to implement and integrate the content. Our creative and technical teams work on-site to fine-tune content and associated technical equipment and operations to complete creative commissioning of the work. Scheduling of the various pieces of content is conducted, together with client training on how to operate the user interface to manage ongoing scheduling of the installation.

CONTENT IMPLEMENTATION
Testing of content onto the installed artwork, rehearsal of performance elements and testing and scheduling of playback program.

CLIENT REVIEW
Coordinated client hosting for viewing of the installation.

CURATION AND SCHEDULING
Curation and scheduling of the final content in collaboration

with the client, and training on schedule operation where client/user scheduling is included.

DOCUMENTATION
A package including the operational and maintenance manual for the CORE control system, Content Guidelines to assist future artists in the generation of content for the installation, and reference content to support system testing.

Refresh

Refresh

This phase is optional.

With each of our designs, there is a considered content rhythm designed to work in harmony with the site and our client. RAMUS can be commissioned to manage the production of new content on an ongoing basis to refresh the content experience when needed and to create additional content that marks calendar and special events.

From public works to private commissions, We bring light to a diverse range of projects.
